PAT Test Failure Modes

Portable Appliances can fail their periodic inspections for a number of reasons. From the most obvious damaged flex failed during the visual inspection to the less apparent reversed polarity IEC lead or a breakdown of the internal insulation of an appliance found during the combined testing and inspection.

The visual inspection is by far the most important test to be conducted with the vast majority of failure modes picked up during this test. A few examples have been shown below to highlight this fact.

heat damage to plugheat damage to extension lead

Two examples of heat damage can be seen above ,continued use of which could have resulted in an electrical fire.

The example below shows the plug top of a 0.75mm2 csa IEC Lead. This example has a few faults why not see if you can spot some. Answers on a postcard please.
